Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to 1st Grade! We are looking forward to helping your students grow as learners and leaders. We can’t wait to see how far they come in the next 9 months. We are excited about the opportunity that we have to work with your child this year. The communication between school and home is very important. We send a communication folder home each day. Please send a note letting us know concerns or important things we need to know in this folder. You may also email us or call the school, if you ever have questions or concerns.

This year will be a big jump from 5K. Your child will be receiving grades in all subjects: reading, math, language arts, science, and social studies. Your child will receive progress reports and report cards. Your child will be taking the MAP test on reading and math in the fall, winter, and spring. Your child will take STAR reader in the fall, winter, and spring. Finally, your child will be given the DRA2 Reading Assessment in the fall, winter, spring, and the end of the year. This assessment will give your child a reading level using reading accurately and answering comprehension questions. The hope is that your child will be reading on grade level by the end of the year. This year will challenge your child. He/she will be expected to think about math in different ways. We will use Engage NY and Zearn to help teach your child in math. This may seem difficult at times, but we assure you your child will be successful. We will model and teach these skills at school.

There are some ways you can help your child at home. Read with them each day and night. Your child will receive Dolch words every two weeks. Please practice reading these 20 words each night. Your child will have 5-6 spelling words and word family words each week. Study these words and learn how to spell them for Friday Spelling Tests. Finally, most important, talk to your child about school, being positive and supportive!

Together, we will have a great school year!!
